Smithy

Hanhiniitty Smithy

Welcome to Hanhiniitty Smithy, to the island village of Niinisaari. I am the village blacksmith Martti.

I’ve been forging knives and other products since 1988 and, since the 1990s, I’ve been running forging courses alongside teaching at the Kuru Institute of Forestry. I moved to Niinisaari with my family in 2005 and started working as a full-time blacksmith in my own workshop. I make all kinds of forged products at my workshop year round – always respecting traditions and quality. My product portfolio includes knives, axes, chef’s knives, chisels and various other forging work. More than a half of my customers are from abroad.

Being a blacksmith is both an occupation and hobby for me. In this work, I never stop learning – I can improve your skills indefinitely. In addition to forging, I’m fascinated by blacksmith traditions and the forging culture. I’ve sought inspiration for my forged products from ancient forged pieces. I want to be a part of keeping the blacksmith traditions alive by running various forging exhibitions for groups and sharing my knowledge of the craft on my forging courses. I wish you a warm welcome to my workshop to learn exciting new things and to have great experiences of success – either in a group or individually. I teach in Finnish and English.

Kind regards,
Martti Malinen, blacksmith

Hanhiniitty Smithy exhibition and gallery is open in summer 2019 from 11th June to 31st August from noon to 5 pm. Mondays we are closed.
Other times open on request and when blacksmith is in his smithy.

THE HOUSE KNIFE

The house knife is a general kitchen knife. Manufactured from a single piece of metal, the knife was first made in the Bronze Age. The knives are made from carbon steel.  After use, the knife should always be rinsed with warm water and hung up to dry. This will ensure that the knife remains sharp and does not rust. Tempered carbon steel cuts well and stays sharp for a long time. If necessary, the blade can be sharpened like a sheath knife.

CHEF’S KNIFE

The Chef’s Knife is the most popular knife model of Hanhiniitty Smithy.  The blade is made from tempered carbon steel. The handle is made from oiled curly birch. The knife should be rinsed and wiped immediately after use and hung on a magnetic strip or a small hook. This will ensure the blade retains its sharpness for a long time and does not rust.

KOIVUMÄKI SHEATH KNIFE
WITH A BIRCH BARK END

The Koivumäki knife is my best selling sheath knife. The blade is made of durable and cutting bearing steel. The handle is made from birch bark, which I collect from my own land on Niinisaari island in Puumala. It is compacted tightly, causing the layers to stick to each other without glue. The bark handle feels pleasant in the hand, which is why it is a desirable material. In addition, it does not crack or absorb water. The sheath is made of 2.5-mm bark-tanned leather.

The Koivumäki knife’s design is a traditional Finnish working knife and the oval handle gives a good hand grip.

Price: From €210

DAMASCUS SHEATH KNIFE

Damascus sheath knife have a relatively large blade suitable for whittling and also for hunting if necessary. I made the blade from two different types of tool steel using the traditional forge welding method.  The sheath is made of 2.5-mm bark-tanned leather. For Damascus sheath knives, I always select the best leather from the neck and back of the hide. At the customer’s request, I made an inlay in the end bearing the initials of the recipient. The sheath knife that I have manufactured is a traditional Finnish utility item, and I hope the owner often carries it with them.

WILDLIFE HATCHET

Wildlife hatchet is one of the most popular products of the smithy. This outdoor axe is a traditional scouting and camping axe. Practical for carrying in your rucksack when you need a small axe with plenty of power. The axe is capable of lopping off quite large branches or splitting small logs for the campfire. The shape of the sheath, which covers the edge and the top part of the poll, stops the axe head cutting into your rucksack.

Price: from 300€

CARVING AXE

Carving Axe is used for woodworking and shaping wood. The axe has been developed with inspiration from old designs. The Carving Axe has a relatively long, curved cutting edge which is double-sided as standard.

Price: from 310€

In addition to making products in the forge, I aim to contribute to preserving the blacksmith’s tradition by holding various forging demonstrations. Also, if they wish, our guests have the opportunity to grab a hammer and to forge themselves a small memory of their visit. The minimum group size for workshops is 10 people. Welcome to visit!
